About Sergei Sarakhanov

Sergei Sarakhanov (b.1988) is a talented Kyiv-based photographer, movie director and teacher who focuses on the unrealized potential of creativity that is available in each and every one of us. Sergei is known for creating “Human Visuals”, a style of photography when the photographer acts as an artist, a visual storyteller, using a variety of practices to tell the stories about people. Graduate of Saint-Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts, he holds photography workshops all over the world, his publications can be found in Vogue and Playboy across Ukraine & Russia, as well as in the French magazine Le Négatif, Germany's weekly newspaper “Die Zeit”, etc.

 

Sergei implements projects that tell about the diversity of people's inner emotions, their destiny, life experience and creative activity. Sergey has worked with such extraordinary personalities as David Lynch, Yasmine Hamdan, Fin Greenall (Fink), Sergei Polunin, Ralph Appelbaum, Pierre Dukan, Janusz Leon Wisniewski, Jamala, Renata Litvinova, Lyudmila Ulitskaya, Vera Polozkova and many others.

 

Sergey is the author of unique training programs of portrait and mobile photography. When interacting with the students, he pays maximum attention to the awareness of their photographic process and the content of their photos. Besides the regular shooting activity, Sarakhanov holds the master classes, lectures and workshops and tutors his students individually. Since 2010 he has held over 100 workshops and about 30 courses as a teacher.

Sergei is the creator of the visual image projects for Nike, Red Bull, Puma, Hennessy, Vodka Finlandia, Canon, Lenovo, Huawei, LG.

 

He is the winner of the “Best photographer 2010” and Grand Prix awards for "The Eyes" photo project. The work was honorably mentioned by David Clark, who is the head of the photographic direction of the gallery Tate (London). In 2018 Sergei was invited as a speaker to Talks at Google program sharing a story about "Modern Photography in Today's High-Speed Digital World".

Workshop Program

This masterclass is designed for every level photographer from a beginner, to a passionate hobbyist, and a real pro for whom the portrait photography is a full-time job.

 Day 1, Saturday 14.09.2019:

 2:00pm - 4:00pm:

  • Visual storytelling and the art of portraits.

  • How to interview your model before the shooting.

  • How to interact with your model? The importance of breathing. Trust and confidence vs fear and pressure.

  • Guidance on posing: 5 main categories for stunning portraits.

  • The difference between mood and emotions.

  • Balancing between staged photography and real storytelling.

 4:00pm - 5:00pm:

  • Break for Lunch

 5:00pm - 6:30pm:

  • How to find and prepare location when you have time and when you don’t.

  • Backgrounds. Lightning equipment.

  • Shooting women and men. Main differences.

  • Taking photos that need no or less post-production.

  • Case: How to take powerful portraits when you only have 8 minutes for shooting David Lynch?

6:30pm - 8:30pm:

  • Shooting with Models indoors and on location in urban Zurich

Day 2, Sunday 15.09.2019:

09:00am – 11:30am:

  • Shooting with Models on location in Zurich old town

11:30pm - 1:00pm:

  • Break for Lunch and coming back to the studio

1:00pm – 4:00pm

  • Composition. Accents. Types of portraits. Static and dynamic portraits. Angles and their impact

  • Light and its role. Continuous and strobe lighting. How to analyse light.

  • Planning your shoots. Choosing locations and clothes, working with a team. Portrait projects and their classification

4:00pm – 5:30pm

  •  Exercises for developing your personal style and portfolio in portrait photography. Participants portfolio review

Breaks:

  • We’ll have short breaks and 1 hour break for lunch.

  • No food is included with the workshop fee. You are free to be on your own or to join the group at the nearby restaurant while on a lunch break on Day 2.

Our Models

During our practical exercises we will be shooting with our models Viktoria and Daria as well as with our male model (TBD) throughout two days in different locations.

Other important stuff

Language: The workshop language is English.

Gear to bring:

  • A DSLR, mirrorless / medium format digital camera or analog camera, and basic knowledge of how to use it.

  • Portrait lens(es) for your camera

  • A laptop to take notes, transfer files (optional).

  • An external hard drive or flash drive for file transfers (optional).

Workshop level: Photographers of any level are welcome, whether you want to learn the basics or discover nuances of portrait photography with Sergei.

Cancellation / Refund Policy: In case of the unlikely even of cancellation from our side 100% of the price will be refunded. Otherwise we consider all payments non-refundable after July 1 and 50% refundable before July 1. If you need to reschedule after July 1, please inform us at least 2 weeks prior to this workshop and we will apply your fee toward a future workshop with Sergei Sarakhanov.

Getting there: Studio is conveniently located in the urban part of Zurich - Baslerstrasse 30, 8048 Zürich. We have a parking lot as well as good public transport connection (Bus 31 stop is a mere 2 minute walk from the studio).
